Characteristics:
Personality: David is shy at first, but quick to warm up to a friendly crowd. A wide-read person, with a passion for antique and classic hardbound books, especially alien adaptations of terran novels. He is an accomplished fencer, and served as captain of the Academy Fencing team during his junior and senior years there. He enjoys poker, but isn't very successful playing the game, having lost sizable amounts of chips of more than one occasion. He also enjoys pool and fondly remembers the days when he played with his brothers at home. David is quick with a wry joke and a fresh smile; he loves to play to a crowd. He is a practiced pianist, and is struggling to learn to play the trumpet. David is always ready to offer a helping hand, no matter what the personal price, and he quickly tries to ingratiate himself by becoming an essential part of any team. He is an admirer of Starfleet and Federation history, and is always ready to expand his knowledge; he yearns for a chance to put what he knows to good use. He believes that by serving along the border of the Federation instead of in the more densely explored inner regions, he will be able to use his unique talents and skills to the advantage of his crewmates, his ship, and himself.
Strengths: David considers his greatest strength to be his ability to work with others as a team, regardless of the circumstances. While at the Academy it was noted by his evaluating officers that he strived to create a cooperative atmosphere in all situations, even when competition was the valued element. David's family history has also contributed to what has been noted as a deep respect for the chain of command, far beyond any values that could have been instilled at Starfleet Academy. With every member of his immediate and extended family in Starfleet to some capacity, knowledge and respect of rank comes as easily walking and talking.
Weaknesses: Noted by his evaluators at Starfleet Academy and also on his Personnel Record is the fact that David has certain psychological issues regarding situations of extreme personal danger. During times of maximum duress, David has been known to offer himself to make foolhardy or even suicidal decisions, if he believes that by his actions and decisions the greater good will be served and lives will be preserved. It is possible that this stems from a deep-seated personal desire to prove himself worthy of carrying his family name into the annals of Starfleet and Federation history.
Quirks: None
Ambitions: David's greatest ambition is to one day attain the rank of Captain before retiring from field service in Starfleet. He ultimately hopes to move on to a diplomatic post, the much coveted title of Ambassador-At-Large is his personal goal. The opportunity to serve aboard a starship in a true diplomatic capacity, bringing Federation values and morals to other sentient species, expanding the Federation's borders through diplomatic ability, these are his greatest ambitions.
Interests: Known to his friends as an avid musician. David prefers to play piano in his off-duty hours. He is always on the look-out for a quiet space with good acoustics. He is currently struggling to learn to play the trumpet and is finding that being left-handed is a detriment in more ways than one. David is also an accomplished fencer and can be found often in the holodeck or in the ship's gymnasium, practicing against real or computerized opponents. He enjoys a good game of poker with friends when the opportunity presents itself, although not very good at the game, (his poker face isn't all it could be), he likes the chance to sit around and talk with his friends. He has also been known to play a game of pool and enjoy a drink or two when given the time, especially on shoreleave, saying that shipboard felts don't have the same give as planetside tables.

He owns a pet cat, a female Russian Blue named Catarina. The cat was given to him as a kitten on his graduation day from Starfleet Academy. His mother knew of David's immense respect for Lt. Comm. Data, the COO aboard the USS Enterprise-E, and also knew that Data owned a cat as well. She gave him Catarina by saying, "Every good Ops Officer has a cat, and if you're going to be the best in the fleet, you need a great cat." Since that day, David's cat has been with him at every posting, hiding in his quarters for him when he returns from shift.

Past:
Born in San Francisco on a bright day in late winter, only a stone's throw from the grounds of Starfleet Academy. David is the eldest son born to Captain Thomas Oliver McClellan (CO, USS Ark Royal, NCC-24315) and Commander Mary Magdalene McClellan (Instructor, Starfleet Academy, Astrometrics). David comes from a long line of accomplished Starfleet officers and one of the proudest families in Starfleet. His family holds the singular distinction of graduating a member from the Academy once every four years through the history of the Federation Starfleet. With such a long line to look back on, the weight of his family's responsibilities and obligations to his family name often weigh on his shoulders.

The eldest of three children, David has two younger brothers, both serving in Starfleet as well. His brother Michael serves as the Communications Officer aboard the USS Hood, NCC-32995, Nebula Class. While his brother Christopher serves as the Asst. Tactical Officer aboard the USS Thermopylae, NCC-48610, Excelsior Class. His youth was spent in the primary education system of San Francisco while his mother enjoyed an extended tenure as an associate professor of Astrometrics. His father served with distinction in numerous border skirmishes with the Tzenkethi, the Cardassians, the Tholians, and the Borg.

While serving as commander of the USS Ark Royal, an Akira Class, Captain McClellan was severely injured during an exchange of fire with five Jem'Hadar attack ships at the end of the Federation-Dominion War. These injuries forced Captain McClellan to be removed from the field list of active commanders and assume a post at Starfleet Headquarters. Although this put his father back in his life on a more permanent basis, the incident also reinforced to young David that Starfleet was not merely a life of adventure but also one of danger and sacrifice.

After finishing his secondary education, David decided to follow in his family's footsteps and apply to Starfleet Academy. Although acceptance and graduation seemed to be a virtual guarantee for someone from such a respected family, David nevertheless worked as hard as possible and performed above average in every area of examination. While at the academy, he enjoyed both athletics and academics, always trying to carefully balance the two with a structured social life. He became captain of the Academy fencing team in his 3rd year and continued in that stead through graduation. He also played piano in the so-called "Cadet's Orchestra" and continued a love of music that began in his childhood. He also played on the academy golf team and an intramural baseball team called the "Academy Astros".

Academically, David excelled in Starship Operations and Interspecies Relations & Politics. His love of history grew during his time at the academy as did his love for reading and collecting classic novels. After graduation, his sought his first posting with an exploratory vessel, ignoring more than one offer from The Starfleet Diplomatic Corps.
